Course Overview

The Foundation L2 Course in Carpentry and Joinery will introduce you to carpentry and joinery skills, as well as Bricklaying skills. You will learn, develop and practise the skills required for employment and/or career progression in carpentry or joinery.

The course covers trade specific studies, such as wood joining techniques (joinery) and basic site carpentry plus basic bricklaying skills:

  • Principles of building construction, information and communication
  • Maintaining and using carpentry and joinery hand tools
  • Preparing and using carpentry and joinery portable power tools
  • Producing woodworking joints, bricklaying to create walls
  • Health, safety and welfare in construction

You’ll be assessed through practical projects, written and online tests and, upon completion, you’ll gain:

  • Appropriate supporting qualifications to broaden your skill set and meet the needs of industry
  • Skills Activities
  • Maths and English

To enter the course, you need a minimum of 4 GCSEs, Grade D or above, to include Maths/Maths Numeracy and English/Welsh First Language or an appropriate Entry Level qualification.

You’ll need to have a desire to work in the construction industry. Full commitment to attendance is required, as is respect for others, enthusiasm for the subject and self-motivation. You’ll be continually assessed and there is an expectation that you’ll continue your studies and coursework during your own time.

After completing the L2 Foundation in Carpentry and Joinery course, you can progress to the next level to boost your skills further or go straight into employment using the skills you’ve developed.

A minimum of 4 GCSEs grade D or above to include Maths/Numeracy and English/Welsh First Language.

You’ll need to undertake a construction industry assessment to help determine the most appropriate course.
