Course Overview
This course is an in-depth and dynamic insight into the complex technology and maintenance and repair of motor vehicles.
This course has additional units, compared to the Diploma Level 2 qualification, to assist those candidates who are aiming for Higher Education or Higher Level Apprenticeships.
If you progress onto a motor vehicle apprenticeship, this course will provide you with the complete theory component required for it.

You will cover the following vehicle technical units as part of your studies:
- Routine vehicle maintenance
- Light vehicle engine technology
- Vehicle electrical and electronic systems
- Light vehicle chassis technology
- Vehicle inspections
- Light vehicle transmission systems
You will also study the following advanced units which are in addition to the above Diploma Level 2 units:
- Vehicle Mathematics
- Vehicle Science
- Vehicle Electronics
- Vehicle ICT
You’ll be assessed via practical competence tasks and observations, written assignments and online tests.
Upon completion of this course, you will achieve:
Institute of the Motor Industry (IMI) Extended Diploma Vehicle Maintenance & Repair Level 2
- Appropriate supporting qualifications to broaden your skill set and meet the needs of industry
- Skills Activities (as part of the Skills Certificate Challenge)
Full commitment to attendance is required, as the ability to work independently and as part of a team. You should have a strong desire to work in the motor vehicle industry, abide by the college ethos and be prepared to improve your level of knowledge of academic subjects.

To enter this course, you will need the Level 1 Diploma in Light Vehicle Maintenance and Repair at a Merit Grade and GCSE English and Maths with a grade C or above.
You can also gain direct entry to the course with a minimum of 5 GCSE’s grade C or above to include Maths/Numeracy, English and a Science
You’ll need to purchase appropriate Personal Protective Equipment, such as boots and overalls, the cost of which is approximately £40.00. You’ll also need to supply your own stationery and folders.
